Synopsis
Near the Ecuador-Colombia border, Carmela, an Afro-Ecuadorian woman, opens her home to thousands of Venezuelan migrants walking south in search of a better life. For years, she has balanced her humanitarian work with family life, despite limited resources and community resistance. But when the pandemic shuts borders and her husband is unexpectedly imprisoned, Carmela must take his place, crossing illegally into Colombia to keep food on the table. As the crisis deepens, Carmela confronts her emotional past and reconnects with her children, who step in to help. Through intimate, observational storytelling, the film explores migration, family, and resilience from Carmela’s perspective, revealing how one woman’s quiet strength sustains a home, a community, and purpose in the face of chaos.
